disadvantages of online degree programs
Despite all the wonderful aspects of online degree programs, they do have their drawbacks. High tuition costs, lack of personal communication and interaction, and limited access to the Internet can make online degrees difficult for some people.

Costs

With the increased popularity of online degree programs has also come an increased cost. Some programs run as high as $400 per credit hour, which can be far more than some can afford; however, when this is compared to attending a school out-of-state or a private university, the costs are comparable.

Lack of Interaction

Another disadvantage for some people is the lack of personal communication and interaction involved in online classes. Although students do email and post discussion messages, sometimes even joining a chat room, this may not be enough for those with questioning learning styles. In addition, those who remember life without a computer may find it difficult to believe that a class through a computer is as effective as a traditional classroom course.

Internet Access

Limited Internet access also cuts down on the number of people who can participate in online courses. Many courses require a certain number of postings per week (i.e., postings 5 of 7 days), as well as electronically submitted work and chatrooms. For those without high-speed Internet or Internet at all, they may not have the time to visit the library each day to complete their assignments.

In your own case, you will have to decide whether these disadvantages are dealbreakers or whether an online degree program can work for you.
